15U & 17U MEN'S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS - DAY 2 RECAP

15U MEN:

Newfoundland 86 Saskatchewan 69

Newfoundland’s 15U team extended their winning streak to two with an 86-69 victory over Saskatchewan.  Saskatchewan has now dropped their first two games of the tournament.  Newfoundland carried a 45-37 lead into the half-time break and did not look back from there.

Daniel Foo of Newfoundland led all scorers with 30 points, and added 9 rebounds in the victory.  He was also named the Home Run Sports player of the game.  Atlee Simon had 21 points and 11 rebounds in a losing cause for team Saskatchewan. 

Newfoundland hopes to continue their hot streak when they take on New Brunswick at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, August 4th.  Saskatchewan will look for their first victor against New Brunswick on Wednesday. 

Manitoba 95 New Brunswick 55

Manitoba improved to 2-0 with a 95-55 victory over team New Brunswick.  Manitoba dominated from the beginning, opening with a 35-7 lead after 1 quarter. 

Junior Sesay and Evan Bruce both had a game high 20 points for Manitoba.  Kuet Kuet had 8 rebounds in the winning cause.  Erik Nissen had an impressive 17 points and 13 rebounds for New Brunswick 

The Home Run Sports player of the game was Manitoba’s Junior Sesay who added 6 rebounds and 7 assists to go with his 20 points.  Manitoba will look to go 3-0 when they take on PEI Wednesday, August 4th at 9:00 am.  New Brunswick will look for their first victory against Saskatchewan at 9:00 am Wednesday morning. 

British Columbia 63 Alberta 62

Luka Petkovic hit a miraculous 3-pointer at the buzzer to help BC defeat Alberta 63-62.  The game was back and forth the entire contest, with the score tied at 43 after three quarters.  Alberta was up 2 with seconds to play, when Luca hit a running three from the corner on an inbound play.  

The Home Run Sports player of the game was BC’s Luka Petkovic who totalled 15 points in the win.  Chase Ruttenberg added 17 points for BC while Scott Lamb had a game high 24 points in a losing cause for Alberta.  

BC will face the tough Ontario team on Wednesday, August 4th at 8:15 pm.  Alberta looks to rebound against Quebec tomorrow at 1:30 pm. 

Ontario 89 Quebec 70

Ontario’s 15U team improved to 2-0 with an 89-70 victory over Quebec.  Down three points after 3 quarters, Ontario outscored Quebec 32-10 in the final quarter to seal a comeback victory and hand Quebec their first tournament loss.   

Malcolm Divivier scored 24 points to go along with 7 rebounds and 7 assists in being the Home Run Sports player of the game.  Noah Doust scored 21 points and had 10 rebounds for team Quebec.   

Ontario moves on to play British Columbia in their final round robin game.  The game will take place Wednesday at 8:15 pm.  Quebec will finish their round robin versus Alberta, also on Wednesday.   

17U MEN:

Ontario 114 Newfoundland 55

The Ontario 17U team opened their tournament with an impressive 114-55 victory over team Newfoundland.  Ontario outscored Newfoundland in all four quarters on way to the lopsided win.    

The Nothers player of the game was Ontario’s Kaza Keane who collected 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists in the victory.  Gary Neville led Newfoundland with 12 points. 

Ontario will look to continue their winning ways when they take on British Columbia on the east court on Wednesday, August 4th, at 3:45 pm.  Newfoundland will face Saskatchewan on Wednesday at 11:15 am. 

British Columbia 81 Saskatchewan 60

British Columbia defeated Saskatchewan 81-60 on the east court of the Investors Group Athletic Centre in Day 2 action.  BC led after all four quarters, including a 24-3 run in the fourth.   

The Nothers player of the game was BC’s Billy Cheng who collected 12 points and 3 assists.   Reiner Theil of BC had a game high 19 points, while Saskatchewan’s Matthew Forbes had 12 points in the loss. 

British Columbia now faces Ontario in an exciting Wednesday match-up.  They play on the east court at 3:45 pm.  Saskatchewan faces Newfoundland at 11:15 am that same day, with both teams looking for their first win of the tournament.

Quebec 114 New Brunswick 78

The Quebec 17U team opened up their tournament with a 114-78 victory over New Brunswick.  New Brunswick concluded the round robin portion of the tournament at 1-1.  Quebec had a four point lead after the first quarter but pulled away in the second outscoring New Brunswick 34-18 in the frame.

The Nothers player of the game was Quebec’s Peter Weston who led all scorers with 29 points.  Olivier Hanlan added 21 points for Quebec.  New Brunswick’s leading scorer was Adam Spurrell who finished with 17 points.

Quebec will now face the Territories on August 4th at 8:15 pm.  With a victory they would seal the number one seed in pool A.  New Brunswick’s opponent is yet to be determined, but they will be playing Aug. 5th at 3:45 pm.

Nova Scotia 86 Prince Edward Island 72

Nova Scotia opened up their tournament play with an 86-72 victory over Prince Edward Island.  Nova Scotia entered the half with a four point lead and stretched that lead to 10 after three quarters of play.

Shaquille Smith led Nova Scotia scorers with 22 points, and added 12 rebounds.  Fergus Duke added 20 in the victory and was named the Nothers player of the game.  Jacob Simmons was the high scorer for PEI dropping in 23, with team member Matthew Daley adding 22.

Nova Scotia will face Alberta in their next match.  The game takes place Wednesday at 3:45 pm.  PEI will go against the hosts from Manitoba at 1:30 pm on Wednesday.
