15U & 17U MEN'S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS - DAY 4 RECAP

15U MEN:

New Brunswick 40 Prince Edward Island 45

Prince Edward Island found the win column with a close 45-40 win over team New Brunswick.  PEI built up a 11 point lead by half-time and held on in the second half to secure its first tournament victory. 

The Home Run Sports player of the game was PEI’s Randy Affleck.  Randy had 17 points and added 7 rebounds.  Erik Nissen again led New Brunswick in scoring with 14 points and collected 14 rebounds. 

Both teams will face each other again on Saturday.  Them, along with Saskatchewan, will play in a round robin for placement starting tonight at 8:15 pm.

Manitoba 81 Newfoundland 66

Manitoba won its 4th straight game by a score of 81-66.  Manitoba handed Newfoundland its first loss of the tournament.  Down seven points after the first, Manitoba chipped away at the lead and eventually wore Newfoundland down in the fourth. 

Junior Sesay again had a strong showing for Manitoba with 24 points, 12 rebounds, and 8 assists.  Sesay was name the Home Run Sports player of the game.  Evan Bruce added 21 points in the win.  Evan Smith had 15 points to lead Newfoundland. 

Manitoba will face Alberta in quarter-final action tonight at 8:15 pm.  The winner will move into the semis against team Ontario.  Newfoundland will square off against British Columbia in the other quarter-final match-up.  The winner of that game will face Quebec in the semi-finals.  

British Columbia 71 Newfoundland 64

British Columbia booked its ticket into the 15U semi-finals with a tough 71-64 victory over Newfoundland.  BC took an eight point lead into the half and remained in control through to the end.

Montell Lindgren was named the Home Run Sports player of the game.  Montell had 10 points on 5 for 9 shooting for the winning side.  Newfoundland was led offensively by Daniel Foo who collected 16 points for team Newfoundland. 

British Columbia will battle team Quebec for a spot in the championship final on Friday at 3:45 pm.  Newfoundland will try to regroup and will face the loser of the Alberta and Manitoba quarter final.  That game will take place on Friday at 11:15 am.

Alberta 42 Manitoba 94

Manitoba’s win streak reached 5 with a 94-42 win over team Alberta.  Manitoba put up 57 first half points on the way to victory.  Manitoba is now into the semi-finals where they face team Ontario Friday at 6:00 pm.  Alberta will square off against Newfoundland on Saturday morning. 

Junior Sesay is getting familiar with being named the Home Run Sports player of the game.  He led team Toba with 23 points to go along with 5 rebounds.  Alberta was lead by guard Scott Lamb’s 17 points.  

Saskatchewan 76 Prince Edward Island 49

Saskatchewan defeated PEI for the second time in the tournament by a 76-49 score in Thursday night action.  PEI carried a two point lead into the second quarter but it was all Saskatchewan from there.  Saskatchewan and PEI both face New Brunswick in their last games of the tournament.  Saskatchewan plays them on Friday at 1:30 pm while New Brunswick sees them on Saturday at 9:00 am.

Alexander Unruh was named the Home Run Sports Player of the game for Saskatchewan.  He had a game high 17 points and 6 assists.  Randy Affleck was PEI’s leading scorer with 11 points. 

17U MEN:

Territories 53 Prince Edward Island 91

Prince Edward Island found the winning touch by disposing of the Territories 91-53.  Outscoring the Territories by 20 in the first quarter led to the easy route.   

Matthew Daley of PEI had 14 points and 13 rebounds in the win and was named the Nothers player of the game.  Kevin McLeod had a game high 22 points for PEI.  Napolean Kelly of the Territories dished in 10 points to lead his side. 

Both teams continue with games on Friday.

Alberta 66 Saskatchewan 90

Saskatchewan led from beginning to end and have secured the first semi-final birth on the 17U side by beating Alberta 90-66.  Saskatchewan had a 22 point lead at half that proved too much for Alberta to overcome.      

Joe De Ciman was the Nothers player of the game for team Saskatchewan.  Joe accumulated 27 points while adding 13 rebounds and 5 steals.  Brin Taylor had 16 points for the losing side Alberta.   

Saskatchewan will face the winner of Ontario and New Brunswick in the Friday night semi-final.  That game takes place at 8:15 pm.  Alberta faces off against the loser of the Ontario and New Brunswick game on Friday at 1:30 pm. 

Ontario 85 New Brunswick 58

Ontario moves on to play Saskatchewan in the semi-finals after an 85-58 win over New Brunswick.  The Ontario lead was only seven after three quarters, but Ontario turned up the heat in the fourth and outscored NB 29-9 in the frame.  

The Nothers player of the game was given to Ontario’s Rohan Boney.  Boney had 10 points, 9 rebounds, and 8 assists in the Ontario victory.  Peter Esson of New Brunswick had 15 points in a losing cause.   

Ontario goes into the quarter finals with a two game win streak.  They will face-off against New Brunswick on August 5th at 3:45 pm.  BC finds themselves playing Nova Scotia in a Thursday afternoon quarter final game. 

British Columbia 98 Nova Scotia 49

British Columbia jumped out to a 25-9 lead after one quarter on way to a 98 quarter final victory over Nova Scotia.  BC’s defence held Nova Scotia to only 17 first half points.
 
Leading BC was the Nothers player of the game Vijay Dhillon.  Vijay was one assist short of a triple-double with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 9 assists.  Shaquille Smith was the leading Nova Scotia scorer with 13 points. 

Ontario now will play Saskatchewan in the semi-finals; that game takes place tomorrow at 8:15 pm.  New Brunswick and Alberta will play at 1:30 pm on Friday.

Quebec 114 Manitoba 73

Quebec handed the host team a tough defeat, winning easily 114-73 and advancing to Friday’s semi-finals where they will take on team British Columbia.  Manitoba made their way into the quarter finals with a hard fought 87-78 victory over a scrappy PEI team.  Quebec never trailed in the game and look to remain hot when they play BC.   

The Nothers player of the game was Quebec’s Fradaric Dura who had 24 points in the victory.  Manitoba’s Joey Nitychoruk had 21 points for the losing side Manitoba. 

Both teams play again on Friday; Manitoba at 3:45 pm and Quebec at 6:00 pm.
