After a rest day on Sunday the PNG Games athletics competition resumed on Monday. The highlight of the day was a high quality mens 400m hurdles final won by Penniel Joshua of New Ireland in 55.10 secs from his team mate Ephraim Lerkin with 56.15secs. Manuai Kenas of NCD prevented a clean sweep for New Ireland by edging Raymond Koniel for the bronze with a time of 56.25secs. Another top performance was by Mary Kua in winning the womens 5000m in a new national junior record time of 18min 45.31 secs followed by Ongan Awa (18:54) . Bala Nicholas made it a clean sweep for Simbu in 19min 08 seconds which was quite impressive considering she had run the 1500m earlier in the session .Nazmiel Lee Marai of NCD caused an upset in the mens 100m final by maintaining good form in the closing stages to overhaul the pre race favourite Kupun Wisil. Helen Philemon stamped her authority on the womens 100m in the semi final to post the fastest time of all the rounds (13.02 secs) and went on to win the final from Lyeenn Nilmo and Nancy Malamut. Victor Ame from Central Province was the fastest of the 55 entrants in the mens 400m with a time of 50.66 secs in round one. Simbai Kasper of Simbu was the fastest qualifier from 57 entrants in the mens 1500m semi final, posting a time of 4min 10.98 secs. However with another five athletes running 4min 14 or better including SkeneKiage, Veherney Babob, David Georasi, Martin Orovo and defending champion George Yamak, Thursdays final promises to be one of the highlights of the competition. Jenny Albert was the fastest qualifier in the womens 1500m semi final , with Bala Nicholas and MirriamGoiye not far behind.
In the field events DebonoParaka posted the best throw of the qualifying rounds with 39.65metres. Lily Poroli of NCD won gold in the womens discus with 30.40metres.Idau Asigau of NCD led the qualifiers for the mens long jump with 6.49metres. The mens Javelin produced some good results with Timothy Maggie of Morobe leading the way with 53.59 metres. However with 5 other throwers bettering 50metres a great competition is expected in the final. Young Abel Siune produced another top performance in the 10000m to win the gold medal with a time of 33min 46 seconds. After tracking race leader Kupsy Bisamo for 17 laps the youngster surged to the front with a 78 second lap which Bisamo could not match and Siune maintained a strong pace all the way to the finish.
