Toea Wisil was in sensaonal form at the weekend at the ACT Championships in Canberra, breaking
her own national record by 0.03 seconds to win the 200m in 23.43 seconds, and coming close to her
best in the 100m by running 11.44 seconds in both the semi-final and final. Wisil had made a solid
start to the season with three 100m races in Brisbane with her times averaging 11.63 seconds, but as
many others have found, the Canberra track is super fast and in perfect conditions many athletes
including Wisil recorded special times at the weekend.
Coming so early in the season these times are very encouraging for Toea’s bid to run the qualifying
times for the Olympic Games, said Athletics PNG President Tony Green and she will certainly be
looking forward to the opportunity to run on the same track again in two weeks me at the
Canberra Track Classic.
Meanwhile Nelson Stone is looking forward to his first competition of the season in Brisbane next
weekend. The Pacific Games 400m champion has been back in Brisbane for three weeks and is looking
forward to racing to gauge his fittness and form.
