MORE THAN 90 SECONDS FASTER !
By finishing 4th. in the W5000m. Final at the 8th. Pacific Mini Games in Cook Islands, Ruti took more than 90 seconds off Banrenga's National Record. Her time in Rarotonga was 21-09.36.
Because the Heats of the M110m. Hurdles were not needed, Beteru Ateri went through to a straight final. Thus Ruti set the standard for the rest of the team.
It inspired Derin Pendle (also competing for the first time overseas) to run a PB in the M1500m. Final where he placed 7th. in 4-47.87 next day. The others competing on Day 3 of the Athletics were:- Raobu Tarawa who threw close to his best in placing 9th. in the MJavelin with 49.38m.; Boitu Baiteke (another first-timer) placing 5th. in the MLong jump with 6.33m. (behind his best), followed by George Pine (doing his "second" event) in 9th. place with 5.76m.
