DISAPPOINTMENT.
Only three athletes came to the start of the two Road Races today. Fortunately the two who got up early and came to the Half-Marathon both finished. Unfortunately the one who started running the 10K. did not !
The decision had been made earlier in the year (when designing the calendar) to move these two races from Sunday morning to Saturday. The early start (0615 for the longer race) meant little traffic and cooler conditions. Water stops were arranged at 10K. and 15K. But the enthusiasm of a few years ago for such events has waned, and so the standards of participation and performance have stagnated.
SLOWLY !
In spite of Bakarawa being a trained athlete (at school level) and one of the best distance runners in the country, he has not trained seriously for about three months. So the running was slow. Tekarai is not a young man, but was very keen to "run 20K." True to his word he finished !
DISAPPEARED !
As one of our first truly international athletes, Benson might have been expected to complete his race. He was on time and ready for the 0645 start, and set off in sprightly fashion. However, he did not reach the finish. When I visited his house a little later, no-one had seen him there either. So we have a mystery to solve !
