MORE CREDIT TO KIRIBATI !
Following KAA nominations and the recent OAA Championships, our fastest Youth (under-18) sprinter, Tanroo Taniera, plus our main Sprints Coach (Tierata Taukaban) have been invited to join the team from the Oceania Islands which will compete in the AYOF in Sydney from January 17 - 21. The actual Athletics programme starts on Jan. 19. Our members are expected to leave Tarawa on Tuesday, Jan. 16 and return on Jan. 22.
ADDING TO A GROWING REPUTATION !
Since we are still really "children", growing up in an "adult" world, these kind of selections and representations - if properly used - can only add to the growing reputation of I-Kiribati coaches and athletes. Outsiders can barely begin to understand the significance of such benefits in obtaining Government funding for further expensive adventures overseas. They add to the selection of Kauaba Ibutuna and Rianimarewe Betero as Grand Prix Squad coaches in recent years. We thank OAA for their increasing confidence in us !
UP-DATE !
Well ! They went and they participated. This was quite a large international Meeting. To check full results, go to the Oceania National Olympics Committees' (ONOC) Home Page (through which you came to access KAA), click on Athletics from the "Regional Federations" list at the top and then browse the News items. For Kiribati, Tierata was involved in some coaching of the Islands Squad. Tanroo ran in a 100m. "B" race, clocking 11.81. He also ran in a 4 x 100m. Relay in which his team clocked 44.54, fractionally faster than the Kiribati National Record (44.6) !! So he is getting used to running fast and in fast company. Since he is only 16, if he can avoid further injury (particularly to his legs), he should have a bright future.
