SPONSORED BY TAIWAN !
Not for the first time, the Taiwanese Ambassador (Mr. Chen) gave his valuable support to Athletics. This time he provided funds to pay for the transport of four teams to the Stadium. Unfortunately, there was confusion for one school, which might have challenged closer for the title if they had not arrived late by public bus !
Among the rules made by the Primary Schools' Committee was one which said that any one competitor could take part in only one event plus the Relay. We found that, not only did some "double up" but in some cases some Juniors ran in both Junior and Senior ! In spite of this, with each school expected to bring teams of 40, there must have been at least 200 athletes there and the majority followed the rules ! But this was not about seeking to disqualify ! It was all about participation and experience.
Small basic complications like not staying in lanes on the straight, or ignoring the cones marking the inside line, are par for the course until someone tours the Primary Schools giving both staff and students necessary briefings. The staff who came to the Organising Meeting were given clear advice about how the Relays would be run. Unfortunately it was not the same people who brought teams to the track, and the advice had not been passed on !
For these and other reasons only a provisional Team Points result was announced today and no prizes were distributed. This was not a big problem, and all the teams did well in some events. The probability is that all the five teams will receive something !
To summarise a few other details, there were two age-groups. Junior was Classes 3 and 4 (aged approx. 8/9). Senior was Classes 5 and 6, aged approx. 10/11. The five competing schools had asked to put two competitors into every event, and mostly they did. The schools were:- Abaunamou (ABA); Bikenibeu West (BW); Taakenbairiki (TAA); Tebwanimwaneka (TEB); War Memorial (WM).
