Level 0 Referees Clinic Conducted

On the 3rd and 4th of April a FIBA Level 0 Referees basketball clinic was organized by Basketball Fiji, and for the first time the clinic was conducted by a local. The clinic was conducted by our very own FIBA International Referee, Navi Talei Naivalu.

Basketball Fiji would like to thank Navi for lending us his service for the two day event. On Friday the 3rd Navi took participants through the theory aspect of the clinic.

A large number of participants were made up of officials and players from the Suva and Raiwaqa Associations. A notable face at the clinic was National mens gold medal coach Paul Whippy and national men's manger Poseci Moce. The theory part of the clinic was conducted at FASANOC's board meeting rooms and ran for three hours. Also present was Latter Days Saints primary school teacher Timaima Vitinanilagi. It is great to have one of the eight primary school teachers who are involved in the Post Fiji Kaji Primary Schools Basketball competition take time out from her family and friends to join the clinic.

The second phase of the clinic was conducted at EDS court Raiwaqa. Each participant was put into partners and each partner was given a turn to conduct a simulated referee's call in a foul situation. At the end of the clinic each participant was able to work away with a clear understanding of the role of the referee and on the rules of the game.

The clinic was a huge success.  Each participant had great respect for Navi as he is a highly decorated referee and has refereed at some of the highest levels.

We at Basketball Fiji would like to thank Navi Naivalu for lending us his service and also in joining basketball Fiji in the quest to professionalize the sport in the country.
