$5000 given to b'ball team

BASKETBALL Fiji received a major boost ahead of the final Pacific Games levy due tomorrow.

Foster's Group Pacific Limited (FGPL) yesterday presented a $5000 cheque in a bid to help the national men's and women's team to retain their gold medal in Noumea, New Caledonia.

Basketball Fiji development officer Laisiasa Puamau said they owed $9,000 to the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC).

He said the sponsorship from FGPL would help them pay their final levy to the FASANOC.

"We did a walk-a-thon earlier where we collected $2000. We will have a Barrel Nite and we hope to earn $2000 and with this $5000, we will be able to pay off the final levy of the (basketball) team."

"We would like to thank Foster's for the sponsorship as this has given the team a boost towards out gold medal defence."

FGPL sales and marketing manager Joe Rodan said the company kept their promise of helping the national side.

Rodan said they were privileged to join hands with Basketball Fiji and wished them the very best in the regional meet, starting in August.

"Our company sells product that brings people together. We have been supporting different sports and also helping in the development of sports in the country," he said.

"We hope through this sponsorship the national teams (basketball men's and women's) would go on to defend the gold medals they won in the last games."

Basketball Fiji president Brigadier Iowane Naivalarua said the team was well prepared and assured they would do the nation proud during the Games.
