Day 6- Women's Bronze Medal - Fiji 73 def Guam 55

In the women’s bronze medal match, Guam and Fiji battled it out on the court with an intensity.

As the first quarter of the match progressed, fellow teammates of both sides cheered their fellow teammates along in an excellent display of sportsmanship.

Using their determination, Guam was able to fiercely battle their taller, bigger built opponent, Fiji.

From the start of the match teams scored prolifically with both teams chasing down the ball hard and converting from each opportunity.

The quarter time score was Fiji 18 to Guam 13.

The second quarter of the match saw Fiji working tirelessly, keeping the players of Guam well manned.

Alina Bonto from Guam scored her team an impressive 11 points and 3 rebound’s, with passes coming from fellow teammates.

Georgina Balencagi was Fiji’s top scorer with 9 points and 3 rebounds

With motivation stemming from the fellow sideline player’s cheers, Fiji took the lead at halftime 9 points ahead of Guam 35-26.

The players all quenched their thirst over halftime, and went into the third quarter refreshed.  This was evident in their play.

Taking the ball straightaway was the fierce players of Fiji, scoring their first points of the quarter just moments in.

The supposed ‘underdogs’ of the match Guam, didn’t fault once, keeping a zone defense well in play.

Taking a fall was Isabella Denight, one of Guam’s taller players, on a rebound injuring her ankle. Unfortunately, she had to be helped off the court.

Bonto managed to collect some impressive rebounds making her Guam’s stand out player for the match with 7 rebounds and an astonishing 18 points.

Switching between a zone defence and a full court press was Fiji, which played to their favour, stealing the ball from their opponent 10 times throughout the match.

As the game headed into the fourth and final quarter, the eager players of both teams all looked to score, with Fiji’s Tiyana Kainamoli earning herself a ‘double double’ with 16 points and 11 rebounds, being Fiji’s stand out player.

The bronze medal winning team were Fiji defeating Guam 73-55.

Despite losing, Guam played an excellent match, never giving up for one moment. They were true inspirations for their countries youth.
