Saints create history

LATTER Day Saints created history winning all the boys titles during the Tuckers Ice Cream National Schools Basketball Championship at the Vodafone Arena yesterday.

The platform was set by the under-15 team. They defeated Suva Grammar School 30-24. Then the U17 upset Marist Brothers High School 43-25 before the U19 side escaped the jaws of defeat in a breath-taking final against Lautoka Central College 44-40.

The mouth-watering final brought the crowd to their feet when LCC had two opportunities in the dying seconds to even the scores at 44-all. However, the Lautoka-based school had themselves to blame, missing crucial opportunities.

LCC skipper and former Fiji U19 basketball rep Pita Gus stormed back into the game after trailing 5-24 at the break. Gus who was named as best player was a class above the rest.

LDS skipper and national squad member Digitaki Kacibalavu said it was a historic occasion for the school."We are happy for the win, we came into the game with 101per cent," the Form Six student said. "Lautoka Central played a tough game but I think the boys gave their best shot out there."

Kacibalavu acknowledged the support of the parents, teachers and the school that contributed tremendously to the win.

Basketball Fiji development officer Laisiasa Puamau thanked the sponsors Tuckers Ice Cream for giving $20,000 for the event.
