Suva secondary schools battle for basketball title

JOHN Wesley College are in top form to defend their title as the Suva Secondary Schools Basketball U19 grade boys' champions today. The Raiwaqa School have been unbeaten in 12 rounds of matches and will face off against Marist Brothers High School in the semi-finals.

The Suva Grammar School U15 and U19 girls grade teams have also been unbeaten with both teams to face off against Latter Day Saints Technical College in the final and semi-finals respectively. Meanwhile LDS will feature teams in all playoff matches later today.

With the Fiji Secondary School Basketball Association having only been formed last year, president Navi Naivalu said they had to make do with the resources that they had.

"Ever since we have formed the association we have started these zone competitions which we hadn't happened for a while. "We were not able to get a sponsor for our event but we have been able to manage with the resources that we have," he said.

He added there weren't a lot of schools that participated in the sport and the initiative to have the zones ensuring that they continue to develop the sport.

"We have a few teams in the West that have been playing friendly matches but the development of the game has been going well since the organisation has been handed back to teachers," he said.

The U19 semi-finals start at 8am tomorrow at the FMF Gymnasium.
