Hoops for Health Coaches attend Women's Empowerment Workshop in Australia

This was their first trip to Australian soil to witness and learn from big names in the Australian Sports Organisation and tremendous leaders such as Jan Stirling and Carrie Graf, both being former Coaches to the Australian Opals National Team, Karen Poutsey who is currently the Chair of Basketball New Zealand, Jenny Shipley, a former NZ Prime Minister and Kitty Chiller the Australian Olympic Chef de Mission to the 2016 Olympic Rio games.

The workshop covered topics such as Sport Structures, visions and values of sporting organizations, governance, leadership skills, communication which deals with public speaking along with personal and organizational planning. Leah mentioned that the workshop was a memorable experience and an eye opener for her.

"I learnt many things from the workshop. Most of what I learnt was for personal growth. But from the federation's perspective, an increase in women involvement for the sport as a whole can be impletmented," Leah said.Program that Basketball Fiji currently runs as an example. This program is called "Mum's a Hero". She said that the program has the potential in lending a hand to increasing women participation, whether it's as a player, a supporter, a fan or in the development field in Fiji.

Sisilia also echoed the same statement saying "women down play their intelligence which limits their decisions in being involved with pretty much anything." Both Leah and Sisilia agreed that if women were more involved, business would florish.

"It is statistically proven that with women involved at board level or as a leader, the organization's projected outcome increases drastically. Women bring balance to decisions and action plans. This is why it's important to encourage women to take a stand and say 'I can do this' without doubt", Leah says.

The workshop has enlightened and provided added knowledge on their importance as women in the Basketball Federation.

Basketball Fiji looks forward to working closely with Leah and Sisilia on the matter of increasing women involvement for basketball.
