Amazons Back Winston Appeal

While most teams are vying for exposure in the Powerade-sponsored Winston Appeal Basketball tournament, the Amazons women’s team do not share that thought with them.

The Raiwaqa-based side, are simply there to help raise funds for the victims of Tropical Cyclone Winston. The Amazons basketball team comprised of young women, majority of them are working mothers or students.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, team member Salome Waqaliti said they welcome the initiative of Basketball Fiji in trying to help those who are rebuilding their lives after the devastation caused by TC Winston.

“We are here to support the cause for Winston appeal and we are just here for the love of the game, we are here to support,” she said.

Waqaliti added: “It is really good to see the diversity in talent, we’ve played against teams with players as young as 11-year-old and as you know most of us are mothers, so the diversity and age range and the wide scope of talent.” She added that most of their team members are mothers and they carry on playing for the love of the game.

“We brought our kids to introduce them to the sport, something to do during Easter and knowing that this is the only sport that is running an appeal and we are happy to support such a cause.” “The wide scope and talent being exposed is a good initiative by Fiji basketball and good on the associations to come in together to support. Here we have the Raiwaqa, Suva and Nadi basketball associations.”

The finals is on today at the Vodafone Arena.
