Freshman, Golden Bati win at Ed’s

Freshman and Golden Bati finished off the inaugural 3 on 3 basketball championship held at Ed’s Court yesterday on a high note coming away winners in the men’s and women’s division respectively. Led by former 2008 national U20 skipper, Jese Sikivou, the Freshman proved too good for Mighty Mights in the grand final 38-28. The Golden Bati ladies under the leadership of national U20 squad member and last season’s most valuable player, Mili Koyamaibole escaped with a narrow 18-16 victory in the women’s final over the Knights. Following the success of the tournament, Basketball Fiji development officer Laisiasa Puamau said there are plans to hold two more tournaments of a similar concept before the year ends. “This was the first time we are introducing this competition in the country. We thought it would be wise to test it out in Suva among Suva and Raiwaqa based teams,” said Puamau. “I must say it was encouraging to note the interest shown from the teams.” “A total of 12 teams took part in the event and I must say the competition level was quite high. I am guessing this is because the teams are preparing for the national club championship to begin on Thursday. With that, BF would like to hold two more tournaments of similar nature before the year ends - hopefully if all fall to place, we would like to stage the second tournament around August.”
