The Fiji national men’s basketball team’s road to retain their gold medal looks good after they beat Papua New Guinea yesterday.

The PNG boys gave the Paul Whippy-coached side a tough tussle leading them in the early stages of the game but the Fiji boys came back strongly to win the game by 85-62.

At one stage of the game, PNG led 9-6 before the Leonard Whippy-captained side came back to take the first quarter by 20-9; second quarter 40-25 and third quarter 61-46.

In the fourth quarter, the PNG boys tried to make a comeback but it wasn’t enough to shut out the reigning Pacific champs

Coach Paul Whippy said all credit goes to the team as a whole for managing to stand up to the PNG team.

“It was the most pressured game they had and this was a good game for us as the earlier games weren’t so hard,” Whippy said.

He said they focused on their defence and it proved well for them.
