The Fiji Under-19 men’s basketball team walloped Papua New Guinea 97-56 in the second round of the Oceania Youth Championship in Australia on Tuesday.
This was after they played brilliantly to beat New Caledonia 81-76 on Monday.
Fiji led PNG 76-25 at halftime and continued their dominance in the second half.
The Fiji women’s team recorded their highest win after walloping Guam 64-31 in their first game but lost to New Zealand 30-57 on Tuesday.
Basketball Fiji development officer Laisiasa Puamau said it was a positive start for both teams.
“There were a lot of Fiji supporters who turned up to cheer the teams,” Puamau said.
“And both teams played well, many were impressed to see how Fiji played on court displaying their talented skills.
“The women’s team played well against New Zealand and gave them a good run.
“If they maintain the intensity in the second half they would have caused the first upset at the championships,” Puamau said.
Fiji women’s captain Grace Taito was the top scorer against Guam.
The men were scheduled to play NZ and the women against PNG last night.
“It will be very exciting, the boys played exceptionally well against New Caledonia and their game against New Zealand will be exciting,” Puamau said.
