Saints, Sparks retain basketball titles

The Saints and the Sparks women’s team retained their titles in the Basketball Fiji Easter competition at the  Vodafone Arena yesterday.
The Leonard Whippy-led  Saints team defeated Boston White 42-28 in the Cup final while Sparks survived a tough battle against USP Choosen to win 28-21.
Saints earlier defeated Warriors 46-24 in the Cup semi-final while Boston White defeated New Era 52-19 to qualify for the final.
In the women’s semi-final Sparks defeated Neptune Dynamic Reds 34-30 while USP Choosen won over Golden Bati 27-22.
Laced with the services of their star players like Lynn Koyamainavure, Merelaini Waqairawai and Maria Tora, Sparks came out firing in the last quarter of the match.
Saints had the likes of Leonard, together with his brothers Marcus and Wayman and other national reps like Jese and Tui Sikivou were too strong from the quarterfinals as they walloped Namoli 66-27 yesterday.
Basketball Fiji Development officer Laisiasa Puamau applauded all participating teams.
“It was a very competitive and exciting tournaments from the first day till the finals,”Puamau said.
“Saints and Sparks were the two consistent teams from day one and they both have the advantage having experienced players in their respective teams,
“We want to acknowledge all the teams that have joined in the competition this year and have made it very competitive and exciting.”
“Also a special acknowledgement to the lone international team that came this year Moni Plus Tamaraws they added another flavor to the competition, we know they have learnt a lot from the competition.”
Quarterfinals (men): Saints 66 Namoli 27, Warriors 43 Mac Paces 37, Boston White 25 Boston Red 20, New Era 37 Idaman 34.
