$5k Help For Basketball Fiji

Basketball Fiji received a $5000 cheque from Uprising Beach Resort yesterday as part of the continuation of grassroots development programme for the sport in Fiji.

Resort operations manager James Pridgeon said the support was part of their support towards Basketball Fiji’s Hoops For Health programme. “This is to generate our commitment towards the Hoops For Health programme, so we are also assisting in the development of a minor sport in the country.

“Hoops for Health” programme helps combat the threat of NCDs in the Pacific,” he said.

Basketball Fiji is part of the first batch of Team Fiji that departs the country today for the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea. Men’s coach Laisiasa Puamau said they were ready for the Games.

“We are sending experienced teams and all players in both the men’s and women’s have played for the country in Oceania tournaments,” Puamau said. “There are no reasons for us not to compete well in PNG,” Puamau said.

Bolstering the men’s side would be three overseas-based players – Marcus Whippy who plays Professional Basketball in New Zealand, and United States-based Mataika Koyamainavure and Joshua Fox.
