Fijians Topple Champions

The Fiji men’s basketball team won their second game after defeating defending champions New Caledonia 79-58 at the Taurama BSP Arena yesterday. The side on Friday defeated Nauru 126-52 .

The Marcus Whippy-captained side led 23-15 in the first quarter.

New Caledonia regrouped well in the second quarter and closed in at Fiji 32-33 at halftime. Fiji got back in the third quarter strengthening their defence, which allowed them to turn over possession.

Assistant coach Frank Saketa said his message at half-time was to improve defence. “We had a game plan and we went in prepared,” Saketa said.

Fiji plays PNG in their third game at 9pm (Fiji) tonight. “PNG will be tough. They will have the home crowd advantage, but we will come back prepared,” he said.

The two Fijians who were instrumental in the win yesterday were Mataika Koyamainavure Junior and Joshua Fox.
