FIJI GAME RESULTS DAY 2

The women’ team always had control in their game against CNMI.  At the end of the first quarter they led 24 – 8, at the end of the 2nd by 39 – 25, at the end of the 3rd by 52 – 39 and held on in the final quarter to win 69 – 46.  The pleasing aspect of the game for the Fiji women was the performance by their new players who were playing just their second ever full game of basketball.

Guards Vika Fifita and Leah Seru stepped up and handled the ball fairly well, while forwards Nandika Singh, Carrol Chan (until injured) and Kate Titoko did a good job for their limited experience and skills.  Swing player, Peniette  Seru showed promise of things to come in her future as did her much younger cousin in Grace Taito.   The effort exhorted by each of these players was a sign for the more experienced players to follow.

Captain Ofa Moce had a big game, scoring a game high total of 25 points while Brittany Hazelman contributed 15 as did Cecelia Oliver.  Leah Seru scored 6, Vika Fifita 4, Penietter Seru 2 and Nandika Sigh her first 2 points in a real basketball game.  Top rebounder was Britts with 11 and Ofa pulled down 10.  15 years old Kate Titoko got her first ever rebound in a game.

The men’s  team did likewise in their game against Palau.  Leading by similar margins at the end of each quarter – 1st = 17 – 9, 2nd = 35 – 21, 3rd = 52 – 29 and 4th = 67 – 47.   Coach Lai may have been a little disappointed with  the final quarter when Fiji were outscored by Palau, maybe a sign of fatigue creeping in.

Top scorers for the men were Waymann Whippy with 18, Jese Sikivou 14 and Martin Liebregts with 13.  Waymann also topped the rebound with 15 and Jese contributed 11.  Our field scoring percentage at 30% obviously needs addressing if we are to be competitive with much stronger teams.  A poor 3 point effort of 2 out of 15 highlights an area for improvement.

After tough games on the first day, the women’s and men’s teams were happy to walk away with a win each.

On a final note, apparently our two referees, Kelevi Serukalou and Joe Tamani are doing well as they have been awarded the top games for the second and third day’s games.
