Long way to go for squad

BASKETBALL Fiji Under-20 women's coach Saula Koroi says they still have a long way to go. "We are still getting the girls to get used to the basics and this has been our targeted area for the past two months since we have been training," said Koroi. The training squad has a number of 35 members with 25 in Suva and 10 from the West. "We have a major issue of non-attendance which I want to stop because if they are committed to the sport then there will be a difference in their performances," Koroi said."However, they are keen and good players but we still have a lot of ground to cover."  Assisting Koroi is Wed-C captain Seini Dobui, who led her side to win the Easter championships. "We are preparing two teams for the Fiji Games which will act as a trial for the girls' and boys' teams and then the final selection to the FIBA Oceania Under-20 Games in New Caledonia will be in September." The youngest player is 14-year-old Western player, Leba Korovou, who was one of the trialists for the national squad. "At the moment we are working on the girls defenses because defence wins the game," said Koroi. "Once your defence is in line, then your offense will be good." Basketball Fiji development officer Lai Puamau is helping the men's U20 training.
