Champions start well

DEFENDING under-19 champions Marist Brothers High School and Adi Cakobau School have made a winning start to their campaign in the Tuckers Ice Cream National Secondary Schools Basketball Championship yesterday.

The tournament which is played at the Vodafone Arena and the FMF Gymnasium has 61 teams and more than 700 students participating.

U19 boys champions MBHS strolled to a 32-7 win over Queen Victoria in its opening match.

The side will play Tilak High from Lautoka and Nasinu Secondary School in its remaining matches today and tomorrow, respectively.

Other favourites in the top grade, Latter Day Saints Secondary, Lautoka Central and Yat Sen also made a winning start.

Last year's runner-up, Natabua, suffered a major blow to their campaign after losing to Laucala Bay Secondary 29-30.

In the girls U19 grade, ACS managed to remain unbeaten despite some tough competition in pool play.

The Waimanu girls overcame LDS 29-26 before edging Cathedral Secondary 7-6.

Yat Sen shocked last year's runner-up St Joseph's Secondary 22-10 after thrashing Suva Grammar 47-8.

Basketball Fiji development officer Laisiasa Puamau said this year's results would "surprise" many.

"Yat Sen is looking good as they defeated St Joseph's which is one of the favourites and Lautoka Central looks like a team to beat in the boys U19 along with Laucala Bay Secondary," he said.

"It's very tough but too early to predict anything. I guess the competition will go to another level when the quarters and semi-finals are decided."

The tournament will end on Thursday.
