$25k Boost for Basketball

ABOUT 700 students are expected to compete in the Tuckers Schools Basketball Championships next month.

Basketball Fiji development officer Laisiasa Puamau said the increase in the number of schools participating was an indication of the rapid growth of the sport.

"From 65 teams last year, we are expecting 70 teams to compete this year," he said.

Western schools such as Tilak High School, Jasper Williams School and Xavier College are expected to provide schools from the Southern Division with stiff competition.

Meanwhile, Basketball Fiji received a cheque for $25,000 to host the event from August 25 to 28 at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.

Goodman Fielder general manager Chris Zaayman said this was their sixth year of partnership with the event.

"This shows our commitment towards development of youth sports stars in the country," he said.

The tournament will be used as a build-up for the FIBA Oceania U19 qualifiers which will be held in December at the same venue.
