SUPER LEAGUES PLANNED FOR FIJI

The unavailabilty of the major basketball facilities in Suva during March has forced the cancellation of the new Super League planned for March.  Not only is the Super lLeague affected but also the preparation plans for the National Women's Squad who are preparing for the FIBA Pre-Olympic Qualifying Tournament to be held in Madrid, Spain in June.   For the Women's Squad it is not only March where their preparation will suffer but also in May when the major factilties are again unavailable.

The Fiji Sports Council controls these facilities and in order to make money hires them out to the local community, where church groups and business functions can afford to pay much higher costs than can sports and therefore sports suffer.

The August Super League will go ahead as the venues are now booked.  The concept of the Super League is to have the players from the National Squads in the NDP (Men's Squad, Womens Squad and Youth Men's and Youth Women's Squads) combine together into teams to play a round robin competition on 3-4 days each week over a 5-6 week period.  The teams will be selected and made as even as possible to create a high level of competition.  The League will be used to also identify players for future NDP squads.

In the August League the teams selected from the National Youth Men's and Youth Women's Squads that will travel to Guam to copmpete in the FIBA Oceania Youth Tournament will compete in the Super League as individual teams.  This will provide a good standard of competition as the teams come to the end of their preparation period.

In addition to assiting the development of players, coaches and referess and score table officials will also get the opportunity to participate at a higher than usual level in Fiji.

By playing the best against the best, Basketball Fiji will assist the development of all particpants in the sport of basketball.
