Vikings guard home turf
LAUTOKA champions Vikings is ready to take on the best from Suva when the 2009 National Basketball Club Championships starts tomorrow.
Vikings, runners up in the Easter tournament men's competition, has been training hard as they aim to keep the inaugural club championships title in the Sugar City.
Vikings player Simi Cagilaba said they had been preparing hard because other teams were also coming with the aim of taking the championship home.
Cagilaba said they want edto finish the year on a high note by winning this tournament.
"After winning the Easter tournament last year, we were unfortunate to have lost to Shaq in the final this year.
"Now we're ready and looking forward to this tournament," Cagilaba sa-id.
Cagilaba said Vikings would rely on the services of experienced players Jale Vunisa, Peter Chambers and Donald Chan to help them in the one-day tournament.
"We also have some young and upcoming players to help us and I believe this will be a very good tournament for us," Cagilaba said.
Twenty teams will take part in this tournament which will be opened by Basketball Fiji president Iowane Naivalurua.
There will be 13 men's and seven women's teams.
The top teams in the men's are Idaman who has national rep Koli Matalau, Lautoka Vikings who has the home court advantage and Raiwaqa champions Byrceland, who has the services of 2004 national U20 rep and captain Serf Peterson.
In the women's division tournament favourites Gol-den Bati led by national U20 captain Britney Hazelman will face stiff competition from current Suva rivals X-Wounds and Wed C and from Lautoka giants Vikings.
The tournament will mark the end of the 2009 basketball season and will be included in the Fiji Basketball 2010 calendar.
