16 teams for basketball meet

RAIWAQA Basketball Association will use its two-week Kamsoo sponsored knockout tournament to select players for the upcoming National Christmas Club Championship in Lautoka.

The knockout tournament that features 10 men's and six women's teams tipped-off at Ed's Court, last night and is backed by Basketball Fiji.

Basketball Fiji development officer Lai Puamau has been working closely with the organisers. "We hope to make it an annual tournament," he said.

"All the clubs affiliated with Raiwaqa Basketball are taking part. The knockout is a build-up for the National Christmas club championship to be hosted by Lautoka on December 12."

Puamau said while Idaman would start as favourites in the men's grade because of their experienced national reps; Sakiusa Rokodi, Peni Sokosoko and Koli Matalau, teams like Barbarians, Waidonu and Mighty Mights should feature strongly as well.

"Mighty Mights was the runner-up in the recent national Under-22 tournament," Puamau said.

Waidonu will be led by former national U20 rep Aron Ahyuk.

Barbarians have two national reps in David Whippy and Etuate Waqarawai.

Puamau said Basketball Fiji had four affiliates Suva, Raiwai, Raiwaqa and Lautoka. "We hope to have Nadi affiliated as a member next year," he said.
