DEFENDING boy's champion, Marist Brothers' High School are on track to defend their titles in the Fiji Secondary School Basketball Championship today.

MBHS are reigning champions in the under-15, under-17 and under-19.

The U17 and U15 have already booked their spots in the quarter-finals while the U19 team remained undefeated and looked to be the form team at the moment.

Latter Day Saints and Natabua High School are the other top contenders in the grade.

In the girl's U19 grade LDS will battle Saint Joseph's Secondary School to determine the top team before the semi-finals tomorrow.

Yat Sen Secondary School and SJSS are the top in the U17 grade while LDS and SJSS have set the pace in the U15.

Basketball Fiji development officer Laisiasa Puamau said today's games would determine the final placing of teams in the knockout stages.

"I think tomorrow's games (today) are crucial to some teams. Some grades are still open so if teams do well tomorrow (today) then they can get through," he said.

Yat Sen wins

THE Yat Sen Secondary School U15 girl's team celebrated as if they have won the final when they edged Suva Grammar School 24-22 in their pool game at the Vodafone Arena yesterday. Ella Carling scored the winning basket when both teams were locked 22-all with seconds left on the clock. YSS Coca-Cola Games gold medallist Kayla Yee featured for the team in the victory.

Ba cause upset

THE Ba Provincial High School team caused one of the upsets of the tournament when its boy's U19 team defeated Gospel High School 23-21 in their pool match. The win was a bonus for the team as they came to be exposed against the talents in Suva. BPHS earlier were thumped by MBHS in their opening pool game on day one.

Rally support

THE Vodafone Arena was abuzz yesterday as spectators cheered for their respective teams on day two of the competition. On the opening game, poor turnout was evident, however as the tournament progressed, supporters rallied behind their teams as they contested for the top honours in the respective grades.

Sea of colours

SEA of colours decorated the Vodafone Arena as different teams proudly wore their respective school colours. Some schools have the players' names printed at the back of their uniforms. Meanwhile the Dilkusha and Gospel High School U19 boy's match was re-drawn to be played at 5pm yesterday. The game was initially scheduled to be the first game in the morning.

Positive move

IT was a positive response from Basketball Fiji when its development officer Laisiasa Puamau told the Ba Provincial High School that they would be visiting the school to help raise the standard of the sport. The western school earlier informed this newspaper they needed more development and knowledge to help them be competitive at secondary school level.

In some upsets yesterday, Queen Victoria School beat YSS 20-19 in the U19 and Ba Provincial High School defeated Cathedral Secondary School 26-17. The Tuckers Ice-Cream sponsored tournament continues today.
