New format for schools basketball

A NEW format will be introduced in the Fiji Secondary Schools Basketball Championship next year.

With an increase in schools participating at the Tuckers Ice-Cream-sponsored tournament, teams will need to qualify for the national championship.

"We have a lot of teams participating this year," Basketball Fiji development officer Laisiasa Puamau said. "We will change the format from next year because there are a lot of schools joining the competition. We will have zones and the top teams will qualify for the national championship."

He said 62 teams would compete this year. Marist Brothers High School will defend the under-19 and U17 boys' titles. Puamau said it would be a tough battle in the U19 grade where Lautoka Central will be a threat. Former Fiji U19 rep Peter Gus will spearhead Central's campaign.

"The teams in the west should not be underestimated, especially Lautoka Central and Natabua High School. Central is led by Peter Gus so they will definitely be a force to reckon with."

Natabua will field 10 teams as they bid for a title.

Meanwhile, Adi Cakobau School U19 team will be out to win their third title in a row. "ACS has won the U19 twice and this year will be the third time if they win again."

Saint Joseph's Secondary School is the defending champion in the girls' U17 and U15 grades. Latter Day Saints is the U15 boys' winner from last year.

The championship will be held on August 26 to 29 in Suva.
