Schools battle at the basketball court

DEFENDING champion Saint Joseph's Secondary School is on track to retain the girls U17 title in the Tuckers Fiji Secondary Schools Basketball Championship.

The Sherina Lesinaivalu-led side beat Jasper Williams High School 29-26 in its opening match at the Vodafone Arena yesterday.

Skipper Lesinaivalu was pleased with the close win. "There was more fouls by Jasper and the rebounds we got, helped us," the Kabara, Lau lass said. "It was really tough for us. Jasper was really good with their defence."

Lesinaivalu has urged SJSS fans to be at the Vodafone Arena today to support her girls.

"We've planned to retain our title. We should work on our defence," she said. Centre Veronica Domonibitu, forward Lervon Fesaitu and point guard Vika Matacewa were impressive in the win.

JWHC captain Atilaite Inoke said they needed to improve their shooting and defending.

A total of 48 schools from Suva, Nadi, Lautoka, Levuka, Tailevu and Ba are taking part in the three-day annual schools basketball fixture featuring more than 600 student basketball players.
