Special Training For Coaches

Basketball Fiji is running a coaches training workshop as part of their Hoops for Health programme this week.

Chief operation officer Laisiasa Puamau said the aim of the training was to equip coaches with skills necessary to coach basketball at the primary school level. “This workshop is to enable coaches to teach other coaches a coaching training plan and also how to deliver that training plan to the kids in primary school level and also to our community,” Puamau said.

“From that we believe will improve our service delivery and the quality in our education in Fiji,” he said.

The hoops health programme will be introduced in three other countries by the international body. The four-day workshop is attended by officials from basketball’s regional governing body, FIBA as well as representatives from Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and Kiribati.

The ‘hoops’ for health is also to improve health related behaviours and contribute to a reduction in the risk of non-communicable diseases through physical activity.

“Basketball Fiji is seeking to tackle the issue of non-communicable diseases early through teaching health messages in their basketball activities in primary schools,” Puamau added.

The workshop ends today.
