Knicks edge Spowart to win title

THE basketball season came to a successful ending last Saturday when two Raiwaqa teams - the Bryce Knicks and the Boston Spowarts battled it out in the final at the Ed's Court.

The Knicks team edged out the Boston Spowarts 32-28.

After a strenuous two days of 24 gruelling pool matches, the Bryceland Warriors, Knicks, Boston Spowart and USP made it through to the semi-finals.

The Beauty Spot-sponsored tournament ended with the Knicks winning the first prize money of $200 while the runner-up received $100.

The two losing semi-finalists received $50 each for their hard work and former basketball rep Aaron Ah Yuk took home the best player prize money of $50.

The whole of the community flocked to watch the games and drivers passing through Grantham Road could not resist the urge to slow down and have a peek at the ongoing battle.

"We started our mission with a knockout tournament and only 10 men's teams. To date the number has increased from 10 men's teams to 18 men's and 10 women's team," said Mala Ravai, the tournament co-ordinator of the Raiwaqa Basketball Association.

He said the season, which started as a revival tournament, was a success with everyone in the community helping out with the training and cleaning of the court.

Ravai said the Raiwaqa Basketball Association reps have plans before the next January tournament to hold development programs for primary and secondary students.
