BF Conducts Workshop for Special Needs Schools in Lautoka

Basketball Fiji has continued its heavy involvement with the Fiji Paralympic Committee in order to increase the participation and development of basketball amongst the Special Schools in Fiji. Mark Seccombe (AYAD) conducted a 1 ½ day clinic in Lautoka for the sports teachers of the Special Schools in the Western Region.

The participating Schools involved in the 2 day workshop held at Sunshine Special School included:

Ra Special School

Ba Special School

Lautoka Special School

Sunshine Special School

Nadi Centre for Special Education

Sigatoka Special School

The workshop is an initiative of the Fiji Paralympic Committee and the Australian Sports Commission. Basketball Fiji is proud to be the first sport associated with this program to help increase the capacity to deliver inclusive sports programs that will contribute to social development of children along with promoting the message “Ability not disability.”

The nine sports teachers present enjoyed learning more about the game of basketball and modified basketball games specifically designed for handicapped children. The teachers are now looking forward to implementing basketball in their schools around the country. Following the workshop Mark was able to conduct a half hour clinic with the children from Sunshine Special School to showcase a few basketball drills to the visiting teachers present. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves, playing dribbling and passing games in the brief skills session.

A similar workshop was conducted in Suva earlier this year which has proven to be a great success. The students have embraced the sport after our coaching sessions with the Fiji Vocational Centre, Gospel School for the Deaf and Hilton Special School. So much so that Hilton Special School and Gospel Special School have asked Basketball Fiji to conduct a basketball game between these two schools, which for many will be the first ever game of basketball. The children have embraced the sport and BF is delighted to be involved in this program.
