The Suva Secondary Schools B/Ball Competition Concludes

The Suva Secondary Schools Basketball Competition concluded last week on the 14th August. The 10 round preliminary competition was organised by Basketball Fiji to give partcipants the maxium number of games and to build on the base numbers before the National Champs which is scheduled on the 22nd - 27th August, 2009 at the Vodafone Arena. Basketball Fiji is proud to have achieved its goals for the preliminary rounds with 44 confirmed teams for our National Champs and anticipate more than 550 students will be partcipating in the tournament. The 44 teams will be representing 13 schools in the U15, U17 and U19 for both boys and girls.

Out of the 13 schools we have 5 new schools that will be participating in the championships and they are Monfort Boys Town, Korean School (Nadi), Ba Provincial (Lautoka), Indian College and Laucala Bay Secondary School. The traditional schools are Natabua, Saint Joseph, Yat Sen, Marist, Gospel, International, Suva Grammar and Latter Day Saints.

In the U19 boys grade International was in dominating form during the preliminary competition and seem to be the team to beat leading up the championships. In the girls division Yat Sen seem to have the edge over Suva Grammar and Latter Day Saints as they have been ranked the number 1 team for the National Champs. Also last years finalise Natabua should be providing stiff competition in the U19 girls division. In the U17 boys grade Indian College is in dominating form going undefeated in the preliminary competition. In the girls divison last years champions LDS will definily be the team to beat as they are undefeated in 10 rounds. In the U15 boys division International has been ranked the number 1 team and should face stiff competition from Yat Sen and Marist. In the girls division LDS finished on top to take the Number 1 spot leading up to the competition however a raising and much improved Laucala Bay team going 5-0 in the last rounds of competition and even defeating the number 1 team.

This years National Secondary Schools Championships will be the biggest and very competitive tournament. Basketball Fiji looks forward to organising a structured tournament for everyone to enjoy.
