LDS upsets in basketball

The 2009 Fiji Secondary School's Twisties Basketball Championships started at the Vodafone Arena in Suva yesterday.

Despite the focus being on Coca-Cola Zero Deans rugby competition next door at the TFL National Stadium, loyal fans turned out to support their schools.

Latter Day Saints Under 19 side caused the biggest upset beating favourites International 36-32 in overtime. Defending girls U19 champion Yat Sen started their campaign on a high note thumping Laucala Bay 40-9.

National basketball rep and championship official Laisiasa Puamau expects the tournament to go up a notch in the second round.

"The U19 Yat Sen girls look good to retain their title but the challenge will come from Natabua. In the boy's division it is hard to say after LDS upset favourites International.

"In the U17 Indian College dominates while in the U15 boys LDS and Yat Sen are the team to watch," Puamau said. The championship ends on Thursday.
