QQQ Marist Heads Into HBL Grand Final

BY TAROMANE MARTIN_ISLAND SUN

LAST YEAR’S Honiara Basketball League runner ups QQQ Marist are back in the grand final spot after their 68-38 win over West Side Bullets
over the weekend.
Waige Turukere opened the scores for Marist in the opening seconds of
the first quarter firing a three pointer to lead Bullets 3-0.
He grabbed another two points laying up under the hoop to make it five
before Philip Tuhaika responded for West Side Bullets with a three
pointer of his own to reduce the score margin two with Marist still
leading 5-3.
Marist grabbed another three points to make it eight, followed by
Uriel Matanani adding another four points to make it 12-5 before West
side started firing back with Philip again orchestrating his teams
attack.
Bullets were awarded two free throws however only managed to grab only
a single basket to make it six before Tuhaika put his team back in the game with another three point basket with a minute and 27 seconds left
on the clock in the first quarter.
Marist added another two more points to extend their lead to 14 only
to see that lead leveled 14-14 by West Side bullets before the first
quarter break whistle.
In the second quarter Marist ran over Bullets dominating them in both
defense and attack as Turueke continued his devastating three points
shooting. Bullets were struggling to cope fitness wise as they watched
Marist take a 32-18 lead over them in the second quarter break.
The game went out of their reach in the third quarter as Marist
continued their brutal attack forcing Bullets to call out a time out
to give themselves a breather. But it only seemed to allow Marist time
to regain their breath returning to finish the quarter with a
commanding 46-21 lead over Bullets.
Bullets tried to stage a last quarter fight back but it was already
too late for them as Marist sealed their spot for the grand final meet
defeating West side Bullets by 68 points to 38.
Marist will wait to play with whoever is the winner of the second semi
clash between Crusaders and Pinoy in the men’s A Division.
While in the Men’s B Division semifinals, strong and individual
brilliance performances by Crusader’s Felix Dianiane and Tristein Zutu
helped spurred Crusaders men’ basketball team into the B Division
grand final after defeating SOSA 27-22 in extra time.
The win will now see Crusaders wait to meet the winner of the second
semifinal later in the week.
Meanwhile Honiara Basketball Association says that they want to thank
all the teams for good sportsmanship and their supporters for a well
behaved and fantastic crowd who came out to watch the weekends
semifinal matches.
