The Womens Basketball on the ball and on the move basketball project was approved last week by the Australian High Commissioners office under its sports outreach program to the Pacific nation. FIBA Oceania was assisted not only in Solomon Island but also other few countries in the Pacific in putiing together very constructive women basketball proposals to the Australian High Commisions.

Description

Run a 4-day basketball program during October aimed at introducing and re-introducing basketball to females of all ages in Honiara. The program will be conducted at a central venue to maximise basketball expertise and will consist of the following:

  • 1 day - Come `n' Try - aimed at female beginners which will include skills and games
  • 1 day - Come `n' Play - aimed at current female players and any new senior players which will include games
  • 1 day - Come Back `n' Play - aimed at older females that played in their youth but do not play anymore.
  • 1 day - Come `n' Help - aimed at females who would like to be involved but not as a player, e.g. Referee, Coach, Administration, and Score bench.

The program will be developed and implemented in schools, existing basketball clubs, and teachers colleges and will be overseen by the National Basketball Development Officer of Solomon Islands.

Need

Basketball in Solomon Islands has the potential to become the number one women sport in the country, it has the infrastructure and volunteers, and this program will encourage a large number of females to participate in the game of basketball. The project will recruit more female players in all age categories and encourage increased participation among referees, administrators and coaches. It is about raising the profile of women's basketball and while that revolves mainly around the players, there are plenty of other women who can impact the game beyond the sidelines.

It will enhance the mental and physical health of women.

It will earn greater respect for women's basketball.

Objectives

What are the 3-4 key things the project will achieve? Be realistic about what can really be achieved.

  1. Increase the number of female participants in basketball

  1. Improve the National Basketball Development leadership skills through professional development.

  1. Enhance the mental and physical health of women and girls

  1. To increase the level of understanding and skills of primary and high school teachers about inclusive physical activity.

Sustainability

If the activities are meant to be continued after the grant period, how are you going to do this (consider strategies, funding, resources, who will manage the program etc).

  1. Successful programs, including weekly competitions for all ages of players, will be established to ensure the popularisation of basketball. These programs will be locality based where courts are available and minimise expense of transport.

  1. Administrators will become leaders and organisers of basketball in Solomon Islands.

  1. The aim is to use this project to increase the popularity and recognition of women's basketball. Once this is recognised and interest is shown by the Government and National Olympic Committee we will tap into the vast funding opportunities that arise from these agencies.

Solomon Islands Basketball Federation would like to sincerely thanks FIBA Oceania in assisting SIBF for the well prepation Womens Basketball on the ball and on the move proposal.
