The Pacific Games Council has awarded the hosting rights for the 16th Pacific Games in 2019 to Tonga.
By a vote of 16 to 6, the 22 Pacific Games Associations, who constitute the membership of the Pacific Games Council, voted in favour of Tonga over Tahiti Nui at the annual General Assembly held on Wallis Island from 18-19 October.
Tonga greeted their victory with a mixture of joy and also relief after coming very close to winning the rights to host the 2015 Games just three years ago.'
Pacific Games Council President Vidhya Lakhan congratulated Tonga on its victory and offered commiserations to Tahiti Nui.
Tonga will become the 7th Pacific Island nation to stage the quadrennial event.
