Kampare! 2nd Kosrae State Games!
The games, held from October 23 to November 7, included 10 sports for men and women: track and field, weightlifting,
tennis, table tennis, outrigger canoeing, basketball, softball, volleyball, baseball and wrestling. The FSM National Olympic Committee (FSMNOC), from 5 different Olympic Solidarity grants, supported the games by donating 1 wrestling mat, 2 table tennis tables, 1 set of Olympic weights, and sport equipment for all of the games played, along with trophies for all of the competitions. The FSMNOC also provided expert off island coaches in basketball, table tennis and wrestling to train and prepare the Kosrae athletes for the games starting in February 2009 to the end of the games.
This was the second island wide games held on Kosrae in 2 years. This year’s games were much more organized and competitive then the first games. Much credit should be given to the Kosrae State Sport Council chaired by Sterling Skilling. Pohnpei also holds successful annual island wide games from August to September each year. Yap and Chuuk have no organized multi-sport island wide games. Yap is now renovating the Yap Sports Complex that was destroyed in a typhoon 4 years ago. When the renovation is complete Yap plans to hold their first state games. Chuuk lacks sports facilities but holds organized island wide basketball and track and field competitions. All 4 FSM States will compete in the 2010 Micronesia Games in Palau in August 2010.
