DAY 2:The sun bright and early welcomed a new day…. The League Finals for the Mini Games are well underway…. Four Pacific Island Teams as we are underway into the final day of competition.
To add to the excitement and hype of the day a mild Tsunami warning with the water slowly ebbing out of the Avatiu and Avarua harbour in the mid morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Samoa contingent who have family and friends affected by the unexpected Tsunami to hit their home country.
Game 2: Tonga vs FijiWith the second kick off for the day, all was weighing down to the next qualifier for the Gold and Silver match off to play Team Cook Islands. Team Fiji gaining extra possession into Tonga’s territory. Tonga were able to convert precious ball time into points through a try to No.6 Muli Pangai and successful conversion to No.9 Atelea Okati.
Fiji quickly responded with a try to No. 11 Petero Vueti. Although unsuccessfully converted, Fiji continued to pursue into Tonga territory. Tonga hit back with a try to their No. 11 Sioeli Bloomfield. With both No. 11’s for Tonga and Fiji on fire today there were more points to be collected. This taking the scores to 10 – 06 in favour of Tonga.
Right on half time, Fiji were able to cross the line with No. 8 Luke Osborne. The conversion was unsuccessful levelling the scores at 10 – 10 at full time.
Both teams entered back into the second half full of energy with the last 7 minutes game time to decide who would qualify for the Gold & Silver match against the Cook Islands. No. 11 Petero Vueti touched down for Fiji to them a slight edge over their Tonga counterparts. The conversion successful, giving Fiji the edge of 16-10. Tonga with their fighting spirit continued to fight back and they slowly edged into Fiji territory and were rewarded with a try to No. 1 Paunga Maasi. The conversion was unsuccessful giving a full time score of Fiji 16 – Tonga 14.
MEDAL CONTENDERSThe games today have an interesting twist as the two top teams after yesterday’s day of competition bowed out in the Gold and Silver match for today. In the Bronze medal league competition for today we will have Manu Samoa vs the Kingdom of Tonga. Always a very exciting competition to watch between the two teams; full of energy and Pacific flair.
In the final game of the league tournament we will have host nations the Cook Islands vs Fiji. Another exciting battle between the two teams and it really is anyone’s game. In the last encounter during the round games yesterday, Fiji came out victors over the Cook Islands edging them out by 24 points to 18 points. With the unexpected upsets in the top two teams, it really is anyone’s game.
