Earthquake & Tsunami News

Soon after, much of Samoa quickly evacuated to higher ground.  Many people in the surrounding villages of Faleata & Tuana'imato evacuated to the Aquatic Centre and took refuge there for the next 2 nights.  The staff of the SSFA immediately mobilised and took a collection giving a $2,000.00 donation to a local relief organisation along with much needed bedding.  The New Zealand Air Force is now based at the Softball Centre in Tuana’imato and a temporary petrol pump has now been installed for their use.

Second Tsunami Evacuation:

The next Wednesday of the after the first Earthquake & Tsunami, Samoa saw yet another Tsunami evacuation announced on the afternoon of Wednesday October 7th.  People hurried to move to higher ground to escape any threat of the Tsunami.  Apia Park staff quickly moved to higher ground, while the Faleata Aquatic Centre facility once again became an evacuation centre for local villages.  On behalf of the Honourable Faumuina Tiatia Liuga, Minister for Natural Resources & Environment, (Under which our Authority is administered) the Board of Directors and staff of the Samoa Sports Facilities Authority, we would like to offer our sincere condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in the Tsunami. We also feel the loss.  May God's blessings of comfort be with you & your families at this time.
