Harold Matthews QF Report: Bulldogs 38 v Townsville 16

The Bulldogs Harold Matthews side survived a first half scare to power past a courageous Townsville Stringers to win 38-16 in the Quarter Final clash at Toyota Park. The victory makes it 11 wins from as many matches for the Bulldogs as they'll face Newcastle in semi final action next weekend.

It wasn't all one-way traffic for the Bulldogs as they trailed 10-0 early on. The Bulldogs were shell shocked early on by the onslaught by the Stingers and faced their toughest challenge from an unknown quantity. The Bulldogs got onto the board through Anthony Boyd-Myers when he scored a determined try from dummy half to make the score 10-6 Townsville's way, which remained the score until half-time.

The experience and professionalism of the Bulldogs outfit told in the second half as they gained momentum and had too much class and superior fitness for the Townsville outfit scoring six tries in after the half-time break.

David Klemmer crashed over to level up the scores at 10-all and the Bulldogs hit the lead when Josh Rainbow crossed over. Townsville bundled up a chip kick put through by the Bulldogs with captain Samisoni Langi on the spot to score under the posts and at 22-10 the Bulldogs confidence was sky high.

Lelani Latu was too strong for the Stringers defence to crash over for the Bulldogs 5th try following excellent lead up work by Brenden Santi and soon after David Minute proved unstoppable scoring his 13th try of the season. Wilson Faanoi crossed for the Bulldogs final try to make the score 38-10.

Townsville to their credit never gave up and was rewarded with a late try to make the score 38-16 in favour of the Bulldogs.

The Stingers did the Townsville district proud with their effort, but the hardened experience and professionalism of the Bulldogs tolled in the second half, but Townsville gave them a massive scare in the opening 30 minutes as they came out breathing fire.

Best for the Bulldogs included Peter Irwin, Brayden Motti, Matthew Fukofuka and Brenden Santi.

The Bulldogs will play Newcastle next Saturday at St Marys Leagues Club Stadium with the winner to play Parramatta or Western Suburbs in the Grand Final.

In other Harold Matthews/ARL National Under 16's Quarter Finals, Newcastle easily accounted for the Central Coast 34-10, Western Suburbs edged out St George 26-24 and Parramatta were too good for Brisbane Norths winning 38-24.
