Over the Australia Day weekend, 3 teams from Phoenix United Basketball Development Club, (U/14’s and two U/16’s) travelled down to Melbourne to compete at the 2014 Eltham Dandenong Junior Basketball tournament.  This was a tournament that none of the Phoenix families had ever competed in before, so the excitement levels were very high!

Our U/14’s competing in C2 achieved an amazing result making it into the grand final and winning!!  The girls played 7 games over 3 days, finishing with a record of 6 wins and 1 loss, their only loss being by 1 point!!  The grand final saw the girls take on Knox-6, which was a thrilling game to watch for all spectators with the lead going back and forth the whole game!!  The final score line showing 25 – 21, Phoenix winning and Lily McMahon picking up the MVP award.

Our U/16’s that competed in C2 had a fantastic weekend getting better with every game they played!  As the confidence of each player grew, as did their performance, leading to some great games of basketball for all to watch.  It was fantastic to see our girls playing some of their best basketball, and really coming together on and off the court.  The girls finished the weekend with 2 wins and 2 losses, with their last score line not reflecting how close the game actually was!

Our other U/16’s that competed in B2, went through undefeated, 7 wins 0 losses!  The grand final was a fast paced, hard fought battle, between two very competitive teams.  Stirling Senators, who had travelled all the way from Western Australia to compete, were a very well drilled team, that didn’t back down from the challenge and competed right up until the final siren!  The final 3 minutes saw the Senators make their final charge, getting within 3 points, but the Phoenix girls pulled together and came away with a 4 point win!  The final score line showing 30 – 26 Phoenix winning, and the game MVP award going to Keisha Tonzing.
