Bryan "Wellsy" Wells was a key player during the golden era of the Dingos when they won three flags in a row from 2003-2005. Joining the club in 2002, Wellsy quickly distinguished himself, winning both the Rookie of the Year Award and Coach's Award that season. Over the next six seasons, before his retirement in 2007, Wellsy played over 50 games and kicked 45 goals, usually roaming across the halfforward flank, but also willing to have a run in the middle or at Ruck.
Known for his ability to kick long distances with both legs, Wellsy distinguished himself on the field throughout his career. Legendary Dingo Craig Stewart was known to remark that Wellsy was the best Canadian player he had ever seen. He won the Stewart Award (Best & Fairest) in 2007, after coming runner-up the year before. He was named to the AFLO AllStar team in 2007 and competed internationally with Northwind, traveling to Australia to for the International Cup in 2002.
Off the field, Wellsy served on the club's Exec for a year, as well as on the AFLO Executive. Passionate about footy and the Dingos, Wellsy was also a key link in a long recruiting chain that helped shape and mould the future of the club. Introduced to the Dingos by his roommate, Chris Ritchie, Wellsy recruited his younger brothers David ("Wellsy Jnr") and Everett ("Spider"), both of whom have had long and impactful careers with the Dingos. Wellsy also recruited others, such as Andrew Nisker and Andrew Anderson through his tennis connections.
In 2015 at the Dingos' 20th Anniversary Gala, Wellsy was honoured and named to the 20-year AllStar Team on the halfforward flank.
Now retired from the club, Wellsy still keeps in touch through the old boys and his brothers. He lives on the west coast with his family.
