2016 - R11 v Boort
Congratulations and “thank you” to everyone who contributed to another highly successful Goods and Services Auction on July 9. Over $51,000 was raised and the pre-auction casserole tea was a big hit. Once again the generosity of our supporters has proved to be second-to-none.
Seniors
Earlier in the day the Bulls took on Boort in what could well and truly have been described as a must win game. The boys rose to the challenge magnificently, jumping out of the blocks with a six goals to one opening quarter and never being seriously threatened on the scoreboard from that point on. The southern end of the ground was where we did most of our damage, with ten of our twelve goals being kicked toward the Mallee Bull Bar. Brendan George was the chief destroyer with five majors as part of another acclaimed performance at centre-half-forward. At the other end of the ground Jake Noonan was rock solid, leading a backline that let through only four goals for the day. The final result was a very pleasing 55-point victory. Awards: Brendan George (Donnellons' Bulk Haulage), Jake Noonan (Landmark), Michael Monteith (Bowens' Commercial Hotel), Lochlan Sirett (Birchip Hotel), Tom Carland (Mlldura Finance), Sean Hogan (Birchip Motel).
Reserves
The reserves fielded a strong line up and took it right up to the Boort side that sat well above them on the ladder. The Bulls won the first and fourth quarters, but it was a dominant third term by the Magpies that was pivotal in their 25-point victory. While there were some handy inclusions to the Bulls side it was great to see some regulars stepping up their game to make the team more competitive. Jake Gleeson played his best game for the season, demonstrating great pace and skill on the wing and kicking three goals. Awards: Jake Gleeson (Donnellons' Bulk Haulage), Harrison Christie (Bowens' Commercial Hotel), Connor Buteux (Birchip Hotel), Jack Lee (Bourkes'Butchers), Matt Rickard (Birchip Hardware), Connor McGinnis (Birchip Motel).
U16s
The U16s match was spectacular viewing for Bulls supporters. The boys dominated from start to finish to record a morale boosting 149-point win. Spencer Weir and Joseph Reid had a great day in the forward line kicking five goals apiece, while Bodie Colbert made a welcome return from injury and was one of the side’s best. Kudos also to the defenders who kept the Magpies goalless. Awards: Joseph Ried (Noonans' Tyres & Sharps’ Bakery), Bodie Colbert (Jnr Executive), Hemi Fowler (B-W Footy Ladies), Ben Milne (TMC Enviro), Jack Trollope (J&K Sheahan Encouragement), Dylan Connelly (BB&LC Coaches’ Award).
U13s
It was second on the ladder versus third in the U13s and the game lived up to expectations. Playing in thick fog, Boort were dominant in the first half before the Calves stormed home in the second. It wasn’t quite enough, with the Magpies holding on to win by eight points. Awards: Patrick Hogan (Noonans’ Tyres & Sharps Bakery), Tadgh Lowry (Jake & Billy Noonan), Daniel Braine (B-W Footy Ladies), Darcy Reid (Bowens’ Sports Store), Harvey Lewis (CWA Coaches’ Award), Archie Lewis (A&M Lee Encouragement).

Hockey
It was a tough day at the office for our hockey players with Boort emerging victorious in all games. The women’s team gave the ladder leading Magpies a bit of a scare, challenging them right up until the final whistle. Unfortunately the back of the net eluded the Bulls and a first half goal from Boort was enough to get them across the line, 1-0. Awards: Genevieve Clark (BWFC Ladies), Claire Cook (Glass) and Madeline Paley (Bourkes’ Butchers). Mark Clark hit an excellent goal in the men’s game but Boort were too strong, winning 4-1. Awards: Robbie Lee (Glass), Connor Buteux (BWFC Ladies) and Andrew Clark (Bowens’ Sports Store). Darcy Reid and Andrew Clark each scored goals in the underage game which Boort won 4-2. Awards: Jack Trollope (Glass), Darcy Reid (Sharps’ Bakery) and Alana Woods (BWFC Ladies). Under 13s lost 7-0. Awards: Tadgh Lowry (Birchip IGA), Hannah Kemp (Birchip Newsagency) and Jenna Angel (BWFC Ladies).
