R7 - Birchip-Watchem v Boort
Seniors
The highlight of the day had to be our seniors getting over the line by three points. The match shaped as a difficult but crucial contest – Boort sat above us on the ladder and a loss would have seen us topple out of the top four. The boys were up to the challenge, however, and the win means we are still in the hunt for a finals double chance. Kicking just seven goals for the day wasn’t ideal, but our total of twenty-one scoring shots shows we have potential for vast improvement in this area. In the middle of the ground Charlie Hallam was clutch, while Lachy Foott’s speed and marking ability tested the Magpies defence all day. Was also great to see two our of our younger brigade – Ben Hogan and Joesph Reid – come to the fore in a big game. Awards: Charlie Hallam (Landmark & Mildura Finance), Lachlan Foott (Donnellon’s Bulk Haulage), Nathan Gordon (Emerald Hotel South Melbourne), Tom Carland (Bowens’ Commercial Hotel), Ben Hogan (Birchip Hotel), Joseph Reid (Watchem Hotel).
Reserves
The reserves were in the hunt throughout their match but Boort did enough to keep the Bulls at bay. The final result was a 16-point win to the Magpies, but coach “Ryno” must be pretty happy to be sitting in the top four after the first round of games. Playing on the ball Jack Lee executed numerous inside 50s for his team and Ben Milne continues to improve as a wily half-back-flanker. Awards: Shan Coffey (Donnellons' Bulk Haulage & Birchip Motel), Jack Lee (Bowens' Commercial Hotel), Ben Milne (Birchip Hotel), Riley Doran (Bourkes' Butchers), Anthony Redford (Birchip Hotel), Bradlee Smith (Birchip Hardware).
U16s
The U16s game saw the fourth placed Bulls take on the fifth placed Magpies. An intriguing battle loomed but after a close first half the Bulls kicked ten goals to one in the second half to storm home by 70 points. Will Sheahan had an ideal midfielders game, collecting numerous possessions and contributing three goals. Brodie Connelly proved to be a handy tall target in the forward line in what was his best game for the season so far. Awards: Will Sheahan (Sharp’s Bakery & Noonans’ Tyres), Brodie Connelly (Jake & Billy Noonan), Lachlan Braine (BWFC Ladies), Jonty Randall (Bowens’ Sports Store), Cormacc Wilson (Wirrim CWA & Landmark), Jesse Kemp (Ray White Rural Encouragement).
U13s
The U13s had the unenviable task of ridding the GGO of a morning frost but that didn’t dampen their enthusiasm or their performance. The Calves hit the scoreboard at regular intervals and were able to keep the Magpies goalless. The result was a 66-point win that saw the team leapfrog from fifth to third on the ladder. Awards: Archie Lewis (Noonans’ Tyres & Sharps Bakery), Will Hogan (Junior Executive), Riley Hogan (BWFC Ladies), Tadgh Lowry (TMC Enviro), Connor Lee (Haymes Paints Encouragement), Charlie Frank (BB&LC Coach’s Award).
Netball
On the netball court there wasn’t much joy for the Bullettes in terms of wins in the senior grades, but the A and B grade teams certainly kept the Magpies on their toes. The fierce competition in both matches brought a finals-like atmosphere. Spectators, coaches and players were kept on the edge of their seats in the A Grade match, which many commented was the best A Grade match they’d witnessed in years. With Amy Walder taking the court as shooter for the first time since baby Isla’s arrival and Hayley Hogan relentless in the mid court, the Bulls went goal for goal with the Magpies for much of the game before going down by only two goals. In the juniors, 16B again showed dominance taking out a convincing win against Boort and pushing them into the top spot on the ladder. The netball club’s iPod shuffle night is coming up on the July 1st so be sure to select and pay for your songs to be in the chance to win some great prizes. 75 songs will be played so to book your favourite tune get in touch with Khiana, Courtney, Brittany or Georgia by the 29th June.
