Seniors
Everything seemed to click for the Bulls who kicked with the wind in the first quarter and skipped out to a 32-point lead. Boort were able to win the second quarter but this was merely a small blot on the copybook for the Bulls as it was the only term that the Magpies were able to score in. A superb defensive effort – highlighted by excellent performances from youngster Ben Hogan and a “sniffly” Danny Jones – ensured that Boort were scoreless in the three other quarters. A dominant display in the midfield also contributed to this statistic and there were none better than ruckman “Fridge” Sirett who was the standout player according to most spectators. It is always nice to see the team put the goal count into double figures and this was achieved through multiple goals to Paulke, Gordon, Carland, Foott, Sean Hogan and Holmes. Awards: Lochlan Sirett (Landmark & Mildura Finance), Ben Hogan (Donnellon’s Bulk Haulage), Nathan Gordon (Emerald Hotel South Melbourne), Riley Hogan (Bowens’ Commercial Hotel), Danny Jones (Birchip Hotel), Joseph Reid (Watchem Hotel).
Reserves
There was plenty on the line in the reserves match with the Bulls needing to win to strengthen their finals chances and Boort needing to win to remain in second spot on the ladder. In the end the Magpies proved why they were more the higher ranked team, winning by 28 points. Shan Coffey and Jack Lee gave senior selectors some food for thought with strong midfield games, but Boort had too many quality players across the ground. Finals aren’t completely out of the question yet for the Bulls, but they cannot afford to drop another game. Awards: Shan Coffey (Donnellons' Bulk Haulage & Birchip Motel), Jack Lee (Bowens' Commercial Hotel), Matt Berry (Birchip Hotel), Alex Noonan (Bourkes' Butchers), Luke Fowler (Watchem Hotel), Nick Sands (Birchip Hardware).
U16s
The U16s were clinical in their 125-point defeat of the Magpies. Full-forward Darcy Reid took full advantage of excellent ball-winning and delivery from the likes of Will Sheahan and Hemi Fowler in the midfield to kick a bag of eight goals. Was also good to see Bailey Baxter – son of Bulls’ Feeny Medallist and premiership player Scott – being named amongst the best. The boys are now eyeing off a second-semi-final berth but must finish the season off strongly. Awards: Will Sheahan (Sharp’s Bakery & Noonans’ Tyres), Brady Paley (Jake & Billy Noonan), Hemi Fowler (BWFC Ladies), Bill Lee (Bowens’ Sports Store), Bailey Baxter (Wirrim CWA & Landmark), Darcy Reid (Ray White Rural Encouragement).
U13s
The U13s helped to make it three wins from four for Birchip-Watchem on the football field, defeating Boort by 54 points. The Calves kicked seven goals and each was off the boot of a different player – a sign of a good team unit. Awards: Ty Colbert (Noonans’ Tyres & Sharps Bakery), Tadgh Lowry (Junior Executive, Will Hogan (BWFC Ladies), Patrick Sheahan (TMC Enviro), Noah Slater (Haymes Paints Encouragement), Jade Kahukura (BB&LC Coach’s Award).
Netball
There was some close matches, some heated contests and a mixed bag of results on the netball court. The 16A&B Bullettes showed why they are finals contenders, both recordingfine wins against Boort with impressive performances from Tahli Haslam (16A) and Abigail Flowers (16B). The senior girls faced some stiff competition and were “so close yet so far”with a draw in A Grade and B Grade going down by just two goals. The penultimate game for the season will see the Bullettes travel to Redback territory and tackle the ladder leaders in many divisions. Don’t forget the upcoming netball club event, Hypno-comedian Wayne Donnelly on August 19th, 9pm at the Birchip Public Hall. It is sure to be a night of laughs (Strictly 18+). Tickets can be pre-purchased for $40, or purchased on the night for $50. If interested please see one of the senior netball players. The evening will be BYO drinks and snacks.
