Seniors
The seniors had a comfortable 61-point win over the Redbacks, the highlight being a dominant second quarter where the Bulls slammed home seven unanswered goals to put the game out of the Burn’s reach. “Paulkey” was a standout, taking countless marks up forward and kicking five majors. He did so with the help of forward line that has gelled very well in recent weeks, with the likes of Gordon, Christie, Foott, Reid and the evergreen Zach Holmes all rotating through to good effect. 18 behinds from 33 scoring shots was not ideal, but to have the team pepper the scoreboard is very encouraging. A finals position is now guaranteed, but such is the closeness of the competition we could finish the home and away season in second, third or fourth. Awards: Stephen Paulke (Landmark & Mildura Finance), Nathan Gordon (Donnellon’s Bulk Haulage), Lochlan Sirett (Emerald Hotel South Melbourne), Jacob Christie (Bowens’ Commercial Hotel), Danny Jones (Birchip Hotel), Tom Carland (Watchem Hotel).
Reserves
The reserves needed to win to keep their finals hopes alive but unfortunately the top-of-the-table Redbacks were too strong, defeating the Bulls by 48 points. Matt Ryan mixed things up by spending the day in the backline and proved himself adept at reading the opposition play and executing intercept marks. While finals are now out of the question for the twos a look at the best players list and beyond shows plenty of players that could seamlessly step into the senior team if the opportunity arose - a happy situation for senior selectors. Awards: Matt Ryan (Donnellons' Bulk Haulage & Birchip Motel), Shan Coffey (Bowens' Commercial Hotel), Mitch Barry (Birchip Hotel), Jack Lee (Bourkes' Butchers), Matt Berry (Watchem Hotel), Brenten Delaney (Birchip Hardware).
U16s
The U16s continued their excellent recent form with a 111-point defeat of Wedderburn. Many of the boys played a quarter or more for the Redbacks to ensure the game could go ahead and the effort they displayed no matter what jumper they wore was exemplary. If the boys win their final regular season game they will secure a double chance in the finals. Awards: Brady Paley (Sharp’s Bakery & Noonans’ Tyres), Bill Lee (Jake & Billy Noonan), Will Sheahan (BWFC Ladies), Lachlan Braine (Bowens’ Sports Store), Kaleb Te Whata (Wirrim CWA & Landmark), Hemi Fowler (Ray White Rural Encouragement).
U13s
28 Calves made the journey to Wedderburn for the U13 match and like the U16s many were willing to swap jumpers to enjoy a game. The scoreboard result was a good one, Birchip-Watchem victorious by 53 points. Awards: Will Hogan (Noonans’ Tyres & Sharps Bakery), Ty Colbert (Junior Executive), Tadgh Lowry (BWFC Ladies), Patrick Sheahan (TMC Enviro), Jade Kahukura (Haymes Paints Encouragement), Luke Slater (BB&LC Coach’s Award).
Netball
On the netball court the game of the day was the 16”A”. A tight contest for the duration, strength, determination, and the will to consolidate a finals position saw the Bullettes defeat the Redbacks by one goal in a thriller. A top class game, there is no doubt that the Bullettes mean business, and this confidence boosting performance means anything is possible come finals. Other grades struggled against flawless Wedderburn outfits, with many big losses showing why Wedderburn are top of the table and premiership favourites in most grades. Final call for next Saturday's netball club event - Hypno-comedian Wayne Donnelly. If you haven’t purchased your tickets they are $40 from the senior netballers. At the door tickets are $50.
