Seniors
Our seniors did just enough to get over the line against Wedderburn, winning by 13 points. The Redbacks started with a flourish, kicking the first six goals of the game. The Bulls stuck to their task, however, gradually pegging back the deficit as the game progressed. Inaccuracy in front of goal caused some frustration, but late in the fourth quarter the Bulls hit the lead and didn’t look back. Stefan Pye was irrepressible in the midfield all day, while Lachy Foott’s ability to provide a target at centre-half-forward was crucial. Awards: Stefan Pye (Landmark & Mildura Finance), Lachy Foott (Donnellon’s Bulk Haulage), Stephen Paulke (Emerald Hotel South Melbourne), Lochy Sirett (Bowens’ Commercial Hotel), Ruben Vesikuru (Birchip Hotel), Jacob Christie (Watchem Hotel).
Reserves
The reserves suffered their first defeat of the season, going down by 23 points. The Bulls battled manfully against the strong Wedderburn team but the Redbacks’ five-goal-to-nil first quarter was the difference. Jack Barry was excellent in his return from injury. Awards: Jack Barry (Donnellon’s Bulk Haulage & Birchip Motel), Jak Goldsmith (Bowens' Commercial Hotel), Mitch Barry (Birchip Hotel), Brenten Delaney (Bourkes' Butchers), Connor Walsh (Watchem Hotel), Julian Liston (Birchip Hardware).
U16s
Some wayward goalkicking was the only negative for the U16s who got home by 98 points. Bodie Colbert continued his rich vein of form, Jonty Randall was impenetrable in defence and Jed Foott bobbed up for three goals. Awards: Bodie Colbert (Sharps Bakery & Noonan Tyres), Jonty Randall (Jake & Billy Noonan), Patrick Hogan (BWFC Ladies Committee), Patrick Sheahan (Bowens Sports Store), Tadgh Lowry (Mallee Branded & Junior Exec), Jonty Randall (A & M Lee Encouragement).
U13s
All members of our U13s list got a run with many filling in for Wedderburn for a quarter or more. The result was an excellent contest with 20 goals kicked between the two teams and the Calves winning by 23 points. Awards: Ty Colbert (Noonans’ Tyres & Sharps Bakery), Archie Lewis (Junior Executive), Lachy Randall (BWFC Ladies), Harvey Lewis (TMC Enviro), Charlie Frank (Landmark Coach’s Award), Harry Cook (J & K Sheahan Encouragement).
Netball
On the netball court, Wedderburn fielded a new-look team in the A grade but were still a little too classy for the Birchip-Watchem girls. An even first quarter blew out to a 14 goal difference by half-time as a result of quality defence by the Redbacks and a number of unforced errors by the Bulls. Other grades also struggled and will need to capitalise more on their opportunities to ensure a spot in finals. The U13s took it up to the Wedderburn girls and were only a goal away at three-quarter-time. The Redbacks pulled away to win, but it was great to see our young stars competing so well. Results and Awards: A Grade: B-W 47 def by Wedderburn 67, Awards: Georgia Lee (Sharps Bakery), Kelly Angel (Birchip Hotel). B Grade: B-W 30 def by Wedderburn 91, Award: Claire Browne (Ballina Bins).
